i was so happy to see the beeeehind of bloody 2011.

it was a really tough year for me in so many ways.......

i went through a lot of tough personal relationship stuff; lost some friends, that weren't really friends to begin with. i learned that "all fluff" and superficial (like my newly acquired therapist puts it) friends, that can't deal with sometimes the serious/hard things in life, are really not worth shedding tears over.

i've made peace with being "hectic" as others might put it......i prefer to call myself straight forward, honest, no bullshit. passionate.

i also experienced what it means when a friend really sticks around and works shit out with you.

i'm slowly learning what's good and bad for me and trying to listen to that little voice inside that in some weird way always knows best.

we have moved and then moved again and then inbetween were homeless for a while. finally we have a lovely house to live in and i will post some photos soon.

we've slowly but surely reinvented skermunkil, which was frikkin hard but also and still is amazingly rewarding.

i think we're setting it up and changing it to become something that, in the future, will naturally change and grow with us.

the world is becoming smaller and smaller and trends/styles will come and go faster than before.

this is exciting.

i have some new years resolutions, i kid you not.

1. get photoshop, learn it, so i can play around with my photos on my blog.

2. start an online shop, make lots of money

3. make more porcelain stuff

4. change my shop around make it awesome and actually get people to go there and buy stuff, not just faithful joburg customers on their holiday(thanks guys), but actual capetonians.

5. have more dress up parties

6. get fit

7. play more scrabble, drink more wine

8. collaborate with cool people, this is the way to go.

9. love my family more and be greatful

we braved the south easter today when we decided to go to milnerton market. i was looking for some specific things that i want to use in jewellery. but i'll say no more about these ideas until i've actually made it. you know how it goes.....if you talk about it too much you never actually end up doing it.

this is not a bitching session, this is an awareness campaign.

once upon a time there was a girl that used to work for us.

dadaadaaa.........daaaaaaa............dam.

she learned stuff from us,

she started her own company and started reproducing some of our things.

i do not want our work to be confused with hers. hell no.

i have not known what to do about it the whole of last year,

but i decided that i will not keep quiet about it any more.

even though i hate her guts, i do not wish for her any bad things, i wish for her good things like a little bit of imagination and maybe some original thinking brain cells.

i wish for her some moral fiber and a good ethical code to live by.

sometimes things are black and white and sometimes they are grey.

these things are mostly subjective.

i have chosen to speak about it cause i believe its just too close for comfort and mainly i don't want people to think that her work is our work.

the thought is devastating.

slitting your wrists kinda stuff.

i'm still trying to figure out how i feel about it. besides all the obvious emotions like disgust, hurt, anger, etc, etc. it leaves me rather confused. the jewellery industry in Cape Town is really really small....is she just a little bit daft, or does she really not get it?

food wine design fair 2011

i've started making rings for the food wine design fair that's happening at the end of the month. all the pieces need to be one offs. i have so many stones and things/components i want to use for this project and i'm finding it really hard to decide what to make. i hardly ever get the time to work on one off pieces, we're always so busy just making easy wear/easy sell kinds of things.
i've been thinking of this ring shank for a while. i really like it, its been shaped just by bending it with pliers and filing it. you don't get this kind of shape in a ring mandrel...where you can just hit the shank into the right shape.
i also shaped the agate crystal vibey by hand and eye coordination. what fun.
the photos don't do it justice, promise. i've also now polished it, which made it look very swisha.
ill post some more picks of more pieces as i finish them.

i tend to get a little depressed. a little sad. i get sucked into the strange dialogues between the crazies that live in my brain. and struggle to see all the rad things in my life. i get melodramatic, and this while i hate people that get melodramatic. i stress. a lot. about stoopid stuff. but also about work. i stress about what to make, when to make it, making it too slow, making it too big, too small, where to sell it, who will buy it, will anybody out there please buy it, nobody likes it, my stuff sucks, everybody hates me,

we have no money, we can't buy no food, and where will we live, how will be live with no money, how will we take care of Happy.

and on and on and on it goes.

no jokes.

i know its ridiculous, cause on the other hand i totally believe that this is a great world with enough money for everyone to live a good life.

everything is provided,

trust your gut and

the right stuff will come at the right time.

don't compare your life with other ridiculously successful people around you either,

this just ads to the the angst.

for me to get out of this sometimes dark and dismal patch of madness i need to remind myself that everything is fine and i have many things to be grateful for,

some mega big things and then also some small things.

i often find the biggest pleasure from the small things.

i would now like to blog regularly about the things that make me happy, the things i'm grateful for.

rory and i have spent the past 2 weeks in joburg, organizing stuff for the neighbourgoods market that started in Braamfontein on the 10th of September.

i'm not from joburg and i've never really spent that much time in the city, but i found it fascinating.

im sure if i had more time, and wasn't in work mode 24/7 i would've found the best second hand shops and i would've bought the best things.

i did manage to do a couple of things.....

i went to a cool shop called, deerhunter, in greenside, where i bought a pair of really cool old pony tekkies and an

afrikaans scrabble set.(awesome)

i went to the tea garden at Emmarentia dam for a burger and chips and fanta orange out of a glass bottle, with my friend sian eliot.

i had the best pasta i think i have ever had (accept raffa's nanna's gnocchi recipe) at vovo telo's in parkhurst.

i had an awesome berry smoothie at wolves and got some of their red velvet cupcakes to take home for family tea time. yum.

i went to the walter sisulu national botanical gardens and was blown away by the plants and the trees and the abundance of birds.

around the market in juta street i visited Post for some great coffee, the lomo shop for some film and friendly faces and Co-op for some amazing design and stuff.

and then between other runnings around, there was some nice family chillout sessions and food feasts that included pretty much beer aaaaand dessert with every meal (say whaaaaaaat????) so now its back to iceberg lettuce and water. awesome i cant wait......):

but the main focus was the market. obviously. i'm a bit ashamed to admit that i was so flustered half the time that i didn't manage to get any real real nice shots. but here's a few. mostly of our stand. duhhhhhhh.

i know.......shameless advertising. (somebody's gotta do it dammit)

i can't even begin to explain how excited i am about some of new things we have been working on. it's been a long time coming. and it has been a long process.

fashion + geometrics

it is a difficult thing going in a different direction, changing styles, reinventing yourself.

for a long time i have been feeling like a big change.

mostly a big change in my work, but like most of you would probably know....

you change one thing in your life and it starts a rollercoaster of change.

its not something you have complete control over and hardly ever know exactly where it is going to end.

it is also a bit scary when everything is still up in the air and you can't quite see the big picture yet.

things are starting to take shape now, and i think (holding thumbs) that i am starting to see the whole.

i think.

one of the reasons it has taken so long to see results, is because i have been experimenting with a new medium, porcelain. its been a long process. playing around with shapes, making moulds, slip casting, playing around with oxides, making balls, painting them, firing them, glazing them, firing them.

friday i got my things back from my friend tessa gawith, who helps me with the firing.

and today i can show you some of it. i would normally keep it for myself until i can do a big reveal, but i'm just too frikkin excited.

ill show you a bit of the process first:

me thinking and planning shapes. making moulds, etc.

slip casting the shapes in porcelain. geometric shapes that will be used as beads....

oh and rolling porcelain clay balls....this was inspired by this

and then deciding to paint them...randomly. and i realised that this ability to randomly draw patterns started when i was a young girl talking on the phone. chit chatting away with friends, i always had to have a pen or pencil in my hand and i was always drawing. scribbling. i can do this, if i don't think about it too much. i feel i lose this ability when i start thinking pattern or design.

i need to just switch off.

i know it's not the most amazing thing that you've ever seen, but i like it. a lot.

and then it gets fired and looks like this.

alexia from "deep dark africa" was visiting our studio the other day and suggested that i photograph some of the collections of things lying around the workshop.

i thought it was a good idea too.

so here goes:

these are just some random things i've been collecting, i might make moulds of the little dolls and cast them in porcelain. i know creepy...but i like creepy. the calcite(bottom left) and pyrite(2nd row on left, below the crystal) stones i'll be using in rings. the big crystal heart stones are going on long chains.

the porcelain ring was an experiment, but i think i will make more, i really like it.

using it all...silver has more than doubled in price in the last year/year and a half, it's made me more aware of using all my offcuts in whichever interesting way i can find. the black chains are also sterling silver, it's just been oxidised to look black. i am really liking long black sterling silver chains at the moment. especially with some of the things i have been working on for the past 2/3 months....(which you will see in the next post....very exciting.....eeeeeeek, finally i have something to show!!!!)

yes, your eyes are not deceiving you....these are enamelled cones.....how cool....you might remember my reference to my porcelain cones a few posts back. i really got into making cones in pottery class and then decided to make some in copper and enamel them. i'm still busy working on them, but as soon as i have some nice images i will post some proper piks. i like them a lot.

one cone on a nice long chain will be great.

just some tools of the trade. very handy these suckers.

colour plates make your life so much simpler. just make them and then you have them and then there's no guessing every time you have to use your colours. there is such a big difference between what the enamels look like before and after firing.

loving loving brass at the moment. we are making our own brass beads, very time consuming, but very rewarding.

also hand cutting and filing some brass hearts, you know i just can't resist that bloody shape. dammit. anyways these are gonna be great, they are quite thick, so will have some really nice weight. i'm also thinking of putting them on some nice long black chains....

im also making some brass rings(the rond one below), with some silver inlays.

here's and example of how we've been using some of our handmade brass beads. these holes were drilled along the side of the bead, not down the middle like the ones above. they look so nice with these semi precious stones.

this is a post about tone policing.

I’ve been seeing an awful lot of tone policing on my dash lately. It seems a lot of people don’t really understand why someone would respond aggressively or angrily, or otherwise emotionally, to having something really fucked up/hurtful/oppressive said to them. Or, they think it’s counterproductive to respond in that way.

First off, the reason that people may respond in a “harsh” manner to oppression: Living in a world that reminds you daily of your lesser worth as a human being can make a person very tired and emotional. When someone says something oppressive — that can be a racist slur, an ableist stereotype, a misogynist dismissal, an invalidation of identity/experiences, being asked invasive and entitled questions, and so on – it feels like being slapped in the face, to the person on the receiving end. The automatic response is emotion and pain. It’s quite exhausting and difficult to restrain the resulting anger. And, frankly, it’s cruel and ridiculous to expect a person to be calm and polite in response to an act of oppression. Marginalized people often do not have the luxury of emotionally distancing themselves from discussions on their rights and experiences.

Second, tone policing is the ultimate derailing tactic. When you tone police, you automatically shift the focus of the conversation away from what you or someone else did that was wrong, and onto the other person and their reaction. Tone policing is a way of not taking responsibility for fucking up, and it dismisses the other person’s position by framing it as being emotional and therefore irrational. The conflation of emotionality with irrationality is often used to silence women and people who are read as women, when they are trying to speak about anything at all. It’s also used against all marginalized people when they attempt to speak about their very personal experiences with oppression. But being emotional does not make one’s points any less valid. It’s also important to note that, by tone policing, you not only refuse to examine your own oppressive behavior, but you also can blame that on the other person, because they were not “nice enough” to be listened to or taken seriously.

Third, the implications: Tone policing assumes that the oppressive act is not an act of aggression, when it very much is. The person who was oppressed by the action, suddenly is no longer a victim, but is “victimizing” the other person by calling them out. Now, I’m not saying it’s okay to be abusive, or oppressive in response to a person who fucks up. But anger is valid. Anger is valid, anger is important, anger brings social change, anger makes people listen, anger is threatening, and anger is passion. Anger is NOT counterproductive; being “nice” is counterproductive. Nobody was ever given rights by politely asking for them. Politeness is nothing but a set of behavioral expectations that is enforced upon marginalized people.

If you see someone who is angry and upset about something that was said or done to them, don’t tell them they should be nicer. Instead: Recognize their emotions as valid. Recognize that their emotional state is an indication that something extremely harmful was done to them, whether it was by you, or someone else. Work to understand why the action was oppressive. Take all that energy that you’re wasting being so concerned with how people are responding to their own oppression, and channel it into fighting oppression.

they're not like a pack of wild dogs in nature where the dogs all look the same, they are this mixed matched wild pack of city dogs. they sleep wherever they can and they eat whatever they can scavenge.

when i was visiting my friends in england i was amazed to see how everybody rides their bikes.

we also saw the Yohji Yamamoto exhibition which was lovely!!!

and i was soooooper excited and proud to see that one of the exhibtions showing at the moment, was

"Figures and Fictions: contemporary South African Photography", an exhibition featuring work by

well known SA photographers.

i also bought this amazing book from the v&a shop. i can now finally give back the one i was borrowing from my friend jane eppel. thanks jane.

i love this book.

after v&a we missioned to go and check out this amazing shop in Shoreditch, called Luna and Curious

wowwwww.....we had to beg them to let us in cause the were already closed, definitely worth the mission.

this is my new friend Tessa Gawith. she is amazing. she makes things. she makes things happen. calmly. if it wasn't for tessa i would never have had all my nice new porcelain things ready for the design indaba. i have nice memories of me and her up and down palmer road between our studios, carrying porcelain slip and clay and cups and bowls and whatnots.

i learned that to make things in clay is a looooooong process, not like jewellery, and that you need to "time manage" properly if you have a deadline. there are many processes and each step takes time...

i'm not that great at sticking to time frames, but tessa draw me a time schedule, it made things easy.

thanks tessa!!!!!, i'm learning so much from you and it makes me sooper happy!!!!!!

i love porcelain. also now that im finally getting around to making stuff in porcelain, im liking making jewellery more....interesting.

i'm loving thick brasssssss....

this little guy i carved out of wax, made a mould of him and cast him in porcelain, waiting for him to finish firing in the kiln. then he will be set in a sterling silver frame...

blue bird garage market on a sunday

this sunday was the 1st vintage market at the blue bird garage in muizenberg. friday nights at the blue bird have already become a regular "uitstappie" down the road for a couple of drinks, some nice food and some hanging out with the friends. rad.

sunday's a different vibe with more stuff and less food. they had lots of really nice antique jewellery and also some really rad vintage clothes.

i bought some nice dresses from my lovely friend Sonnet, she's also got a blog:

one of my most favourite places in the whole wide world is bainskloof. read about the bainskloof pass here, read about where we stayed here and read about the best campsite in bainskloof here.

it's close to cape town, its in the mountains and you can swim everywhere in the cleanest most crystal clear water. hoooowhoooooo!!!! awesome. i love this place tooooo much.

we went to the tankwa karoo national park for the 1st time in jan. 2008, and i've been thinking about it the whole time since, dreaming about going back. angie from lucky pony asked me the other day what i wanted most for christmas and tankwa popped into my head. tried my luck, made a few fonecalls...booked some dates and bob's your uncle....sometimes you need to ask for what you want and you get lucky. . . .

we have literally been working day and night making stock for shops and preparing for the

food wine design fair in joburg at the end of the month. i like it and i dont like it when it gets this crazy.

we are taking part in the new food wine design fair in joburg at the end of november.

it is an Artlogic event and will take place on the rooftop at the Hyde Park shopping center.

we are making new ranges of jewellery especially for the event, so be sure not to miss it.

here are some cute new birds, enamelled on silver....

i also really want to make bunting necklaces....i know this is nothing new, but i think they will look lovely enamelled....some on copper, that would be double sided and some on silver that would only be enamelled on one side, with the silver side polished.

we just came back from walking the whale trail in De Hoop Nature Reserve and we loved it. everybody should go and do it. wow. what fun. we walked for 5 days, 2 days up and down mountains and 3 days along the coast. i saw plants i've never seen before, dolphins and whales(oviousss), some blow holes, mussels and oysters loving life growing free, pairs of lovey dovey oyster catchers every 50meters, caves and and and and...

thanks to lisa's dad for booking it 1 whole year ago. yes, there is a waiting list, if you want to go next year you better book now.

it with sadness in my heart that i tell you that my most favourite weekend in the year is over. . . . sooooo much fun was had by all!!! as always my mind was blown away by the absolute amazingness of the maatjies that go and the crazy beautiful things they contribute.

i'm so excited about this little place that opened just down the road from us in muizenberg....

it's right next to the False bay train station and just around the corner from Palmer road, it takes us like

3 minutes to walk there. awesome.

it's got the raddest furniture and mirrors and pictures and everything is for sale. + it serves up tasty treats and coffees.

amazing windows with amazing light. so rad.

yes yes yes. we are having a lovely sale this saturday in muizenberg.

we would love it if you could come and hang out.
